In today’s episode, the Vitamin D Council evaluates the role of vitamin D in sleep apnea from both a clinical and research perspective.
Dr. Joel Gould, a Dentist in private practice, defines sleep apnea and explains the the impact this disorder has on an individual’s life. He shares his personal experience with sleep apnea, and how vitamin D has played a pivotal role in treating the condition. Dr. Gould shares how he utilizes vitamin D as part of his treatment protocol for patients with sleep apnea.
Dr. Ronaldo Piovezan, a researcher and clinician also joins in the discussion to share findings from a recent study he conducted regarding the role of vitamin D status in obstructive sleep apnea and short sleep duration.
Dr. Piovezan is a clinician and researcher with a focus on aging and its associated health conditions. He specializes in health sciences education, which led him to a master’s degree in science, where he developed research on the evaluation of how doctors make clinical decisions in situations of uncertainty. In 2012, he began his complementary training in Sleep Medicine, which led him to a specialist degree by the “World Association of Sleep Medicine”, and a following Ph.D. candidature.
Since 2014, Dr. Piovezan has collaborated in publications using the “10/66 Dementia Research Group Population-Based Cohort Study”. As a result, he developed a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the World Alzheimer Report, in addition to several papers in international scientific meetings. He was also principal investigator of one Phase 2 clinical trial as part of his Ph.D. and of one Phase 3 international multicenter clinical trial.
Also, for five years, Dr. Piovezan has been teaching assistant in the online postgraduate course: “Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (PPCR)” at Harvard Medical School / Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. At the moment, he develops an innovative educational project as a student of the course “Medical Teaching, Learning and Innovation,” promoted by professors of Harvard University and by the Lemann Foundation. Collaborating in diverse academic and clinical contexts, with the objective of benefiting the population, through an interdisciplinary approach, has been the focus of his professional activities.
Lastly, founder and Medical Director of the Vitamin D Council, Dr. John Cannell, joins the podcast to share his recommendations for vitamin D deficient patients with sleep apnea.
