Maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels may help people breath better and may even protect against tuberculosis, according to research accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology &Metabolism.

The authors collected data from 10,000 people as part of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. The researchers report that people with a history of TB have significantly lower vitamin D levels when compared with those without a history of TB. They also report that lung function improved as vitamin D levels rose.

“This study suggests TB patients may benefit from receiving vitamin D therapy to improve their lung function,” said the study’s lead author, Chan-Jin Choi, MD, PhD, of the Catholic University of Korea’s College of Medicine. “Vitamin D also has potential as a preventative measure for TB. More research is needed to explore the impact vitamin D has on the condition.”
