Update on the AAAS meeting on 14th June 2011

The AAAS is one of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world; they publish the highly respected journal, Science. The AAAS Annual Meeting is not just for scientists, indeed the AAAS designed many of the talks and activities to attract and hold the interest of anyone interested in science.

Here is a list of just a few of the talks, symposia, workshops, seminars, field trips, and other activities:

  • Coastal Geology and Hazards in Southern California
  • Literature and Science, Exploring the Confluence
  • Field trip to San Diego Botanical Gardens
  • The Expansion of the Panama Canal
  • Tsunamis and Storm Surges
  • The Antarctic Ice
  • Death Penalties and Women, the case of Theresa Lewis
  • Music and the Sciences
  • Reconstructing the Face of Princess Takabuti (an Egyptian mummy)
  • Field trip to the San Diego Museum of Man
  • World Fairs held in the USA
  • Second Law of Thermodynamics: Status and Challenges
  • Field Trip for Tide-pooling at Cabrillo National Monument
  • Once and Future Giants: What Ice Age Extinctions Tell Us about the Fate of Earth’s Largest Animals

The meeting will be held on the gorgeous campus of University of San Diego and inexpensive housing is available on campus (dorms). Registration fees for the meeting are also inexpensive, running between $40.00 and $120.00 for the entire meeting. Field Trips are extra and one-day registration is available.

Dr. Cannell will speak first at noon on Tuesday, June 14th. This talk is free and open to the public, requiring no registration. The next day, Dr. Cannell will speak for four hours at a morning Workshop, detailing his work with vitamin D and influenza, autism, and athletic performance. Dr. Cannell’s four-hour talk on vitamin D requires AAAS registration.
