What are vitamin D pathways actually for, from an evolutionary perspective ? We dont actually get a nutrient from VitD as it is basically a signalling molecule. So why are so many important biological functions dependent upon sunlight, as light does not actually do anything and we already have inbuilt thermoregulation which drives us to stay out the cold. Some ideas I had are evolution is making sure we are driven out together to compete during peak energy times or seasons, and the effect on our minds when VitD is low would be to start storing resources and hunkering down for winter ?
