My Vitamin D level has gone up to 145 – I take a multi vitamin 3x per week which contains 800 IU of D – calcium levels are normal. My GP says not to worry about it. What kind of specialist do I see for a second opinion?
First of all just to be sure is the 145 measured as ng/ml or nmol/l? Is this the first Vitamin D level you have ever had? In other words where you always taking the multi with the 800 iu in and have gotten lower readings? Are you getting any “sunshine”? Could the lab work be incorrect?
Jan.2013 levels were 7.2 ng/mL so I took 1000 IU of D3 per day Aug/2013 levels were 22 ng/ml Nov/2013 levels were 14 ng/ml increased D3 to 2000 IU Feb/2014 levels were 96 pg/ml and I stopped supplement Feb/2015 levels were 21 ng/mL May/2015 levels were 99 pg/ml July/2015 levels are 145 pg/ml, for D,1,25 (OH2) total, 136 pg/mL for D3,1,25 (OH)2 9 pg/mL for D2,1,25 (OH)2 Lab work has been done at 3 different labs, including once at a hospital. Stopped all supplements, including multi-vitamin over 3 months ago. Though I live in South Florida, I usually don’t go out until the sun goes down. Should I be seeing a specialist to figure this out, and if so, what kind? At what levels of “D” does this become dangerous? Thank you for any info you can give me.
Here is the problem. You are comparing two very different tests. The correct test to determine Vitamin D deficiency is the 25 OHD test. It is measured usually as ng/ml or nmol/l. That means all the tests above that have “pg/ml” are the incorrect test. So the last correct test was February 2015 and your level was 21 ng/ml. You are very deficient and we here at the VDC recommend taking 5000iu a day. Hope that clears things up. Anymore questions, just ask!
