My doctor gave me 300,000 iu of vitamin D (he said I was low but didn't say how low) to be taken over a week. How long before I feel the effects? He said I should take this then nothing else (apart from salmon once a week) and he will retest in six months’ time.

    Jackieg,

So, you are taking 300,000 IU per week for six months? A usual prescription regimen to quickly treat vitamin D deficiency is 50,000 IU/week for about 8 weeks before being put on a maintenance dose.

Generally, your levels will begin to change after about a month of supplementing. If you check your levels at this time, you will have a good indicator of how that particular dose is affecting your levels.

Since you were prescribed a higher than normal dose, it is recommended to continue to work closely with your doctor to ensure that the dose is safe and effective in raising your levels.
