My 25(OH)D test came back few days ago with [>150 ng/ml] result. I'm not sure what it means, is it just slightly over 150 or anything over it, like lets say 200 or more… Anyway I have been supplementing D3 for a while now, First 4 weeks at 20kIU, then one week at 30kIU and then I upped it to 50kIU for 8 weeks. I'd like to lower my D levels down to around a 100 now but I'm not sure whats the best way to do it. Should I stop taking it and for how long? or just take smaller amounts? I don't want to plummet it down to much.

    I do not know why they are not giving you a more precise reading than the >150ng/ml. Seems odd to me. Also can I assume these amounts were taken once a week and not per day? Any further answers would be based on that answer and if you are average height and weight..

     The half-life of 25(OH)D is about two weeks:

    This means that if your 25(OH)D level was 96 ng/mL and you stopped going into the sun or taking supplements, two weeks later your 25(OH)D level would be expected to be around 48 ng/mL. Two weeks later, it would be half of that and so on. Of course continuing to take 2,000 IU/day will significantly decrease the rate at which your levels come down. I weigh 145-150 pounds and 4,000 IU/day gives me a 25(OH)D level of around 70 ng/mL, so it is a reasonable assumption that your 25(OH)D level would be even higher than mine on the same dose of vitamin D because you weigh less. Throw some additional sun exposure into the mix and it wouldn’t be inconceivable that you would reach a blood level of vitamin D in the 90′s.

    Hi, thanks for your quick reply. I was taking these amounts daily. I wrote an email to the lab asking about what this result of >150 means. Anyway, assuming that I have lets say 160ng/ml in two weeks of not taking D3, It should be halved to about 80ng/ml. I weight 170 pounds, so if I start taking 10kIU then I should keeping my level on about 80 – 100?

    Well I think the lab result is the oddest thing. We know that it is safe to have a level that high but really do not recommend it. So being just a little over is quite different than if you are a lot over.(You really need to find out!)
    So going by Rebecca’s statement than your example is correct. (Remember no sunshine either or levels will not decrease!) Whether or not the 10,000 iu would then keep it at the 80-100 ng/ml level is something you would just have to try and then retest.

    I’ll see what they tell me but for now I’ve stopped taking it until two weeks passes and then I will start at 10kIU/day again, I also take lots of magnesium and K2 with it. I’ll retest at a different lab next time in about 2 months, anyway I haven’t notice any bad symptoms so I think everything is alright.
