Is there any known connection between prematurely closing of a baby's fontanelle and supplementing with vitamin d while breastfeeding (4000 IU a day) and also giving the baby vitamin d (400 Iu per day)?

    No there is no connection.
One of the signs of rickets is “•Soft skull bones and a delay in the closing of the soft spot at the top of your baby’s head (the anterior fontanelle)”. I assume you are talking about the anterior but maybe/or also the posterior fontanelle.
Was this confirmed by x-rays and or scan. I ask because one website said that “Occasionally, the scan will reveal that the soft spot has not really closed and is just difficult to feel.”

Thank you for the reply. it is the anterior fontanelle. It isn’t closed yet but dr. said it is very small less then 1cm (examined manually) and advised to stop giving baby vitamin d and that I should stop taking d as well to hopefully slow down the closing. baby is six and a half months old. So I wondered if there was any documented connection. It does make sense that there could be, if i understand what d does. I also would like to at least continue taking my multivitamin that has 1000 IUs of d but am a bit worried…

So at this website http://pediatriceducation.org/2011/02/14/what-causes-a-bulging-anterior-fontanelle/ it says “The anterior fontanelle is usually 4-6 cm in size at birth and closes at 4-26 months of age.” Your baby is 6 and 1/2 months. Wikipedia says “The anterior fontanelle is generally the last to close between 7-19 months”
Maybe you should get a second opinion before either one of you stop taking Vitamin D!
