I would like to ask you for guidance on vitamin d. Three months ago i had 11 ng/ml and after taking 25.000 weekly now i have 59 ng/ ml and i feel fine. The doctor told me to take 25.000 twice amonth now. The previous week i started to have pain in the right kidmey and the tests showed sand in the kidney. I was advised to drink more water and to stop completely taking vitamjn d3. Do you agree? For how long can i not take vitamin d? Is there alternative to supplements that wont produce stones in my kidneys? Thank you very much.

    All the studies that the Council report in their blog, show that Vitamin D does NOT cause kidney stones. The “lower your Vitamin D level the higher the risk for stones”. So “no” I would not stop the Vitamin D.
    I am also worried about the “low” amount the doctor told you to now take. You now have a great Vitamin D level. We promote a “healthy” level of 50ng/ml. If you now take less Vitamin D then what you were taking, your level will plunge again. It is also much better for you to take a smaller amount of Vitamin D on a “daily basis”. Studies have proved this.
    Now we usually recommend 5000iu a day to reach 50ng/ml but you made it there on an average of what would be 3500 iu a day. (Can I assume you do not take any other type of supplement that has Vitamin D in it also?)
    It may or may not be easy to buy exactly 3500 iu. So you may want to take either 3000 or 4000iu a day. (If you do the 4000iu it will just make your level a little higher. Probably about 69.) You could also alternate the 3 and 4. So on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday take 3000iu and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday take 4000iu.
    I also encourage everyone to read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/. You can read about Vitamin K there and it is Vitamin K that directs calcium to bone and not to soft tissue where you do not want it to go. If you do not think there is enough Vitamin K in your diet, then I recommend a supplement.

    Just to mention i was taking both K2 and magnesium, but what you said is logical. I guess the main problem was not enough water in my diet.

    If I understand correctly, then maybe it was just bad timing. That you were actually working on the stone because of low Vitamin D and it actually came to “light” as you were taking the D.
    I am not a doctor and you do not seem to be complaining of any symptoms of hypercalcemia but were your calcium levels checked at any point after you started taking the Vitamin D? Do you take any supplemental calcium?

    I am not taking any calcium supplement, my blood calcium levels were pretty good around 9, i cant remember now exactly.

    So I went back and read some more and on one of the blog posts Dr. Cannell said….
    The sad thing is that the prevention of kidney stone is easy; just alkalize the body by increasing the magnesium and potassium in the diet. The best way to do this is to eat foods rich in potassium and magnesium such as vegetables, fruit, seeds and nuts. In fact, over three years, those on a potassium-magnesium citrate preparation had a five-fold reduction in kidney stones.
