I had gastric bypass and as a result I do not absorb fat soluble vitamins. Vitamin D seems to be causing me the biggest issues. After recently getting my blood work back my doctor prescribed 50,000 IUs 3x per week. I've been as low as 17 and after taking 50,000 IUs 2x a week for 3 months I'm up to 20. After reading some articles on this forum, my question is would out be better to take 10,000 IUs twice a day 7 days a week? Also what form of Vit D3 has the best absorption rate — caplet or tablet? (I think at this amount of IUs it would be hard to get in a drop). I'd greatly appreciate any recommendations for the best brand! Thank you.

    I don’t think this is the issue but is the 50,000iu D2 OR D3?
    People like you with absorption issues have great luck if they use an oral Vitamin D “spray” because it “bypasses” your intestinal system. So I would try that first.
    I recommend that everyone read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/. It is very important. After you read it, you will also note that Vitamin K is an important co-factor for Vitamin D. When I “quickly” looked up sprays, there are some now that also contain K.
    My suggestion might be that you use two different sprays at one time. I am not sure if you can find a spray that has 5000 iu in it AND Vitamin K. So if you cannot, then get the 5000iu in a spray and do two sprays a day. Also get one with 1000iu and the Vitamin K and do one spray a day. If your levels do rise, then eventually you might only need one 5000iu spray a day plus the one with the Vitamin K.
    Weight is a factor for Vitamin d also. So if you weigh a lot more than 150lbs, you might have to take even more Vitamin D.
    The other thing that “may” work is getting Vitamin D “drops”. Place on your finger and rubbing on the inside of your cheeks. I would think it would do the same thing but I do not have “evidence”, like I do about the sprays.
    Dr.Cannel once said you could try “rubbing it on your skin”. Again I do not have any direct evidence of this working for someone.
    If the above does not work, then you need to come back and tell me!
