I am going to do dark meditation retreats, meaning absolutely no light for weeks and eventually up to 3 months. My question is, that when deprived from all light, can the body handle more vitamin d3 or better put, should it have more such as 10,000 or more each day? Usually it is said that more than 10,000 or 40,000 the body will get vitamin D toxicity. But if the body is deprived of D then wouldn't the maximum dose be much higher. So how much should I take when in dark retreats. Thanks so much, Sarkis

    Under normal circumstances, if deprived of light and your levels are low, than yes technically you need to take more Vitamin D “upfront” and less later on when you are better. Now for example let us say that you live in India, you get plenty of sunshine, take no supplemental Vitamin D and have a level of 50ng/ml(125nmol/l) which we here at the VDC consider “healthy”. In order to keep that healthy level, without any light, you probably need 5000-10,000iu a day. (For the most part we say 5000iu for an average weight adult should give you this level.) Now for example we say you live in India, get some sunshine and take 5000iu, have been tested and your level is 50ng/ml. Then maybe if you took “all of the sunshine away”, you would find that your level is now 40ng/ml so really you need 6000iu a day, in supplement form, to maintain the 50ng/ml.
    So to answer the question, no the maximum dosage does not necessarily need to increase, it depends on the circumstances. So do you supplement with any Vitamin D, how much, how much do you weigh and have you ever been tested?
    Having said all of that I tried to “google”, “dark” meditation, and only got “the dark side of meditation” and I had no idea there was a “dark side” to regular meditation.
    Now the real problem I could see in all of this is that “sunlight”, rays other than B that produce Vitamin D, have a “good” affect on a human. One of them is increased levels of serotonin and another is increased levels of nitric oxide. (There may be more.My brain alludes me at the moment.) So if you do get adequate sunshine and then go “dark”, I would assume it could have a very negative affect. Even if you only get a little sunshine everyday, it could have a profound affect.
    So to me “dark” meditation does not sound like a good idea. Since I couldn’t find any information, is this something “new” or has been going on for “ages”?
