Hi. I have been usually healthy. i have Celiac disease but I am on a strict gluten free diet for years. Last spring I started having a lot of phlegm in my throat and inflammation. I also felt weak and shaky. The doctor did a CBC and said everything was fine. In June I developed a rapidly escalating asthma attack. It took 10 weeks to get under control.with Symbicot. .Up till then, I had only cat-related asthma and never severe with wheezing. This time the asthma had no known trigger. It was frightening. Since then I have been feeling weak. The doctor said my ferritin iron is low and put me on iron supplements. He also told me my D-3 was low at 24. He directed me to take 2000 units D-3 a day. With my asthma, I was never outside in the sunlight, and my weakness started after a long winter. I'm guessing my weakness is related to my low D-3. I have also been short of breath even though my asthma is under control land peak flow volume is good. How much D-3 should I take to get feeling better, and do you think that low D-3 could have triggered the asthma? I am 64 years old and this is the first time I ever had wheezing. My B-12 levels are normal. Thanks! Diane

    HI! Yes, low Vitamin D can cause asthma, inflammation, allergies, weakness (muscles use a lot of Vitamin D) and also Celiac.
    The 2000iu will not be enough. We usually recommend a minimum of 5000iu a day and to retest in 8 weeks to make sure your levels have risen adequately. For most people weighing an average of 150lbs, this will get them to a “healthy” level of 50ng/ml. At levels below 40ng/ml your chances for cancer and autoimmune diseases rises dramatically. Always take D with a meal or snack that has some “fat” in it for better absorption.
    Since you already have health issues, you may seriously want to consider taking more Vitamin D then that. So you could start with 5000iu for 8 weeks, get retested especially since you have gut issues so you can make sure your levels are at 50ng/ml or better. (If they are not, then you need to come back and tell me.) MORE importantly is how you “feel” and what improvements you have seen during that time frame. Regardless of your level, if you think you have made progress but still have some issues, then you may want to consider increasing your amount of Vitamin D and see if you get even better. The “official” upper limit is 10,000iu a day but some of us take more than that.
    Another way to look at this is, you may need a lot more Vitamin D “upfront” to repair damage and smaller maintenance dosages later when you are well. Smaller “meaning” never less than 5000iu a day.
    You can always “check in” and let me know how you are doing.
    Please read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/. It is very important. If taking the Vitamin D gives you any new symptoms, come back and tell me. It usually means you are low in a mineral or vitamin.
    In some countries, not the USA, their B12 range for good health starts at 500. I do not know what your level is. “Normal” may not be enough.

      Thank you! I’ve been so ill and it means a lot to me that you answered my question. I will start taking 5000 units Vit. D today. My calcium levels were normal so I should be fine. I’m also going to take magnesium. I’ll let you know how things go. I need to get to feeling better quickly, because I have to move house in 27 days! Diane

    Hello:
    From what I read, low vitamin D can cause celiac disease? When I talk to people about the benefits of sunshine, vitamin D looks at me madly. They do not believe everything they can do and how beneficial it is for the body. I appreciate every information you provide. I’m learning a lot, I wish I could buy Dr Cannell’s book in Spanish.
