Hello, My 11 year old daughter (weight 35 kgs and overall healthy) was found to be deficient in Vitamin D (25 OH level of 9.5 ng/ml, although she had no symptoms of any Vitamin D deficiency) around 9 months back and as per the recommendation of her pediatric, we gave her Vitamin D3 supplement for 2 months (we gave her 60,000 units supplement, I think 6-7 times) while resulted in her levels shooting up to 65 ng/ml. After this as per the advice of her pediatric we stopped with the supplements for the last 7 months. However, we do give her multiivitamins on alternate days which provides her 5 mcg of Vitamin D. My questions is whether 5 mcg of Vitamin D on alternate days is sufficient for her, going forward as a maintenance dose? We live in India and her exposure to sunliight is moderate.Also is 65 ng/litre very high for her and was such a rapid increase from 9.5 ng/ml to 65 ng/ml in a span of 2 months would have harmed her in anyways that we yet dont know about?     If her exposure is “moderate” then why was she deficient? No she is not getting enough sunlight. Then again no one is.
    Here at the VDC we promote having “healthy levels” of a minimum 50ng/ml. This is because at levels below 40ng/ml your chances for cancer and autoimmune diseases rises “dramatically.
    It is much better for her and anyone to take Vitamin D on a daily basis because this is what research shows. So we recommend 1000iu for every 25lbs of body weight for children with no health issues.(We would recommend more if they had health issues.) So for your child 35kg equals 77 lbs. Therefore she should take 3000 iu a day. So that should equal 75 mcg a day.
    Adults weighing 150lbs (68kg) should take 5000iu a day and if you weigh more than that you have to take more. Has everyone in your family been tested? Even in India most of the population is deficient.

    The 65ng/ml was a great level. So “no” it did not cause any issues and she was probably healthier. At a level of 9.5ng/ml, she had a high risk of rickets.
