Dear Vitamin D Council, Thank you for your much needed work. My husband is 48 years old, Indian, and has adult onset asthma for 5 years. Luckily, the asthma only occasionally flares up but he has to manage his cough associated with it. We recently discovered his Vit D level is just 7 ng/ml. He has started 60,000 UI D3 cholecalciferol granules had with water weekly for 10 weeks. someone suggested he take 60,000 UI DAILY for 10 days. That seemed a bit drastic to us, on reflection. What do you think ? Ofcourse we mean to test again after 10 weeks and decide on further dosage. We have also decided he needs to take 30,000 UI monthly for the rest of his life once his vit d level is between 40-50 ng/ml. we will keep testing for vit d level once or twice a year too.

    It is very important to understand that it is better for humans to take Vitamin D on a “daily” basis rather than weekly or worse yet monthly. If people only have access to a weekly amount because a doctor prescribed it and they cannot get or afford smaller daily amounts, then I would tell them it is OK to take it that way.
    So it would be better for him to take 8000-10,000iu a day for 8 weeks and then retest. If he has not made it to 50ng/ml or higher, then you need to come back and tell me. If he does reach that level then he can take a maintenance dosage of 5000iu a day. This is the amount it takes to keep most people of average weight at 50ng/ml. If he switches to the 5000iu I would retest him again in 8 weeks to make sure his level stays up there on that amount. If his asthma and cough go away on 10,000iu but come back if he switches to 5000iu, then go back to taking the 10,000iu.
    Always take Vitamin D with a meal that has fat in it for better absorption.
    Taking 10,000iu a day is the “official” safe upper limit to take. Taking 40,000iu daily for months, “may” cause hypercalcemia. The 60,000iu a day for ten days would probably be OK but I worry that it might deplete vitamins and minerals.
