Tanning centers in Scotland are now allowed to promote the benefits of tanning beds as a source of vitamin D, despite protest from the Scottish government.
A leaflet produced by the Indigo Sun tanning center stated, “Exposure to UV light (whether from sunlight or sunbeds) is the most important source of vitamin D for people in the UK.”
The Scottish government was not thrilled about the advice, claiming the leaflet was misleading.
The tanning salon defended themselves by saying they were not promoting the exclusive use of sunbeds as a source of vitamin D production. The leaflet also included warnings regarding over-exposure, the need for people with lighter skin or moles to avoid UV exposure, and the need to use protective eye-wear.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) rejected the Scottish government’s complaints, stating it is accepted that UV exposure is the primary source of vitamin D for UK citizens.
