Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a terrifying disease It is a disorder in which antibodies attack the insulation of the nerves (myelin) leaving plaques that short out the nerves. Imagine, a healthy young woman in her 30s wakes up one morning with double vision and difficulty walking. By the end of that day, she tries to go to sleep after listening to her doctor tell her that her MRIs shows multiple neurological lesions, suggestive of multiple sclerosis.

A friend’s mother died a few years ago, the result of prolonged MS. I met her twice and remember each time the circumstances: in a dark apartment in the city. She was wheelchair-bound and spent (wasted) most of her life there, in front of a TV or newspaper.

Reading this piece is for me another “dope-slap”, “if only” moment. If only I knew then what I understand today, perhaps the outcome would have been better, or at least with less suffering.

Perhaps it is a sign – all the studies and discussion – that organized medicine has received its own “dope slap”. Now let’s see how many decades it takes to put all the brainwork into practice.
