Reply To: I am 55 years old and 165 lbs.The last 18 years until January 2017 i had flu only one time, but since January i had flu 5 times.Μy vitamin D level is 34.is there a chance that the reason i had flu so many times is my vitamin d level?
Yes, it is probably because of the low Vitamin D level.
Now you did not say how your level was measured as. If it was measured as ng/ml, you are still at the bottom end of the range. Here at the VDC we believe in maintaining a “healthy” level of 50ng/ml. At levels below 40ng/ml and your chances for cancer and autoimmune disease rises “dramatically”.
If by chance your levels were really measured as nmol/l that makes things even worse. If the 34 was really measured in nmol/l that would translate to 13 in ng/ml.
So for most adults weighing 150lbs we recommend 5000iu a day and you should reach a healthy level. For every 25 lbs over that add another 1000iu. (I think for you the 5000iu will probably be enough.) We do recommend you be tested after 8 weeks to make sure you reach the 50ng/ml (125nmol/l).
Getting your levels higher should reduce sickness but if you do get “something”, you can try taking “extra” vitamin D for several days to see if it shortens the duration.
