Reply To: Hi,
A recent blood test has shown my vitamin d level to be 40nmol. I have been advised by my doctor to obtain some D3 and take 1000iu a day. Is this suffient? I am hypothyroid and also take omeprazole for digestive problems.
Taking the 5000iu a day for 8 weeks should get you to the 125nmol/l and use the same amount for the maintenance dosage. It is a “cumulative affect” over 8 weeks. I also should have said that you should get tested at the end of the 8 weeks to make sure you have reached the 125nmol/l. If you do not, then depending on that level is how much to recommend after that.
Since you were not listing a lot of symptoms, for example joints hurting, extreme fatigue etc., I figured the 5000iu will work for you. If someone has an even lower level or many symptoms or the doctor is treating with the standard higher amount of 50,000iu ONCE a week, then I would recommend 8000iu or more a day for eight weeks. Then if your levels go up and you feel better, then take the 5000iu as maintenance.
If your hypothyroidism was caused by Hashimoto’s (antibodies), then that might also change my answer.
So you can do either one. Just make sure you retest.
