Reply To: Hi,
A recent blood test has shown my vitamin d level to be 40nmol. I have been advised by my doctor to obtain some D3 and take 1000iu a day. Is this suffient? I am hypothyroid and also take omeprazole for digestive problems.
Here at the Vitamin D Council we believe in maintaining a “healthy” level of 50ng/ml which equals 125nmol/l. At levels below 40ng/ml (100nmol/l) your chances for cancer and autoimmune diseases rises “dramatically”.
It usually takes the average adult weighing 150lbs, 5000iu a day to reach this level.
So I recommend the 5000iu a day. Please read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/. It is very important.
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It can cause magnesium deficiencies. If you take the Vitamin D and get any symptoms, they are usually caused by not enough magnesium in the diet but in your case may be caused by the medicine. So come back and tell me if you do get any symptoms.
