I am 68 year old femal in good health. My vitamin D test was 28, I have been put on 50,000units of vitamin D, 1 per week for 12 weeks. This sounds like a high dose. Please comment.

    Studies and research have shown that the human body, to be and stay healthy, requires about 5000iu a day of D3 or more and a blood level of 50ng/ml (125nmol/l). Studies already show that a level of 40ng/ml (100nmol/l) or below and your risk of internal cancers rises dramatically. Please note that there are two different ways to measure Vitamin D and you did not specify which you are. So it is hard for me to tell if you are deficient or extremely deficient.
    I hope you were prescribed D3 and NOT D2. It is better for humans to take D3 and it can be found “over the counter”. So the 50,000iu is about 7100iu a day. So taking a larger amount up front will help to increase your levels faster and later you will need 5000iu a day to maintain healthy levels. It is better to take Vitamin D on a daily basis but taking it once a week is OK.
    I always like to warn people that sometimes but not always, taking Vitamin D can cause symptoms. This will likely mean you have a “mineral” deficiency NOT that the Vitamin D is bad for you. So if you get any symptoms, come back and tell me and I will help you sort it out. .
