Hi, My grandson aged 16 recent diagnosis type1 diabetes, mother has autoimmune hepatitis but Vit D never checked on her. I have always said his level would be low as very clever but not outdoors and hates dairy products. With diagnosis his vitamin D checked and low at 19. Consultant (I'm in UK) said no need supplements just be outside for 20mins /day in short sleeved top. On review younger doctor told to take supplements Vit D 25micrograms but he is refusing as says consultant knows best. Sure he should be taking , can you advise please

    Neither the consultant nor the doctor are correct.There is a lot of valuable information at http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/ and it really does not take that long to read. So I encourage everyone in your family to read it.
    To partially summarize what you will read there is the following. We here at the VDC believe in having healthy Vitamin D levels and those should equal a minimum of 50ng/ml (125nmol/l). This is because at levels below 40ng/ml and your risk for cancer and autoimmune diseases rises dramatically. (Diabetes is autoimmune.) In order to have this level the average weight person of 150lbs has to take 5000iu a day. (If your grandson is over 125lbs, 5000iu is still OK to take.) Anyone who weighs a lot more than 150lbs, needs to take more than 5000iu. The 1000iu will not make or keep him healthy.
    The consultant is wrong because first at the latitude of the UK, you cannot make any (very little) Vitamin D in the winter time. Therefore supplements or sunlamps are needed during that time. Along with latitude, time of year, skin color, time of exposure, timing of exposure (between 10-2pm when your shadow is the shortest) and one of the most important the amount of skin exposed. You have to expose a very large area of skin NOT just your arms and face.
    As an example there was another Q and A person just the other day from the UK that said “she got plenty of sunshine over the summer” and her level was still below 30ng/ml. She also made the comment that she “thought it (her level) would have been higher”.
    There is NOT enough Vitamin D in food to make a human healthy!
