Hello! I recently got my results back from a normal routine blood work, and found out my vitamin d is at 19 ng, and the lower limit is 30 ng. My doctor wants me to take 50,000 iu prescription strength to get it back up.. I have heard fat soluble vitamins are toxic when taken too much.. Is this safe?? I also think it's ergocalciferol and have read that the cholecalciferol absorbs better? Any ideas? Should I just get more sunlight and stay off the supplements? I'm a natural kind of guy and haven't taken a pill in years. I have noticed a slight decrease in energy and oversleeping so I thought this might fix the issue. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

    When you get a chance you should read “About Vitamin D” at the top of this page. You should also pay close attention to the section on “Other Vitamins and Minerals” which is very important!
    Your right you should take D3 and not prescription D2. The 50,000iu once a week is not too much but here at the VDC we try and promote daily intake. That would mean the equivalent of taking about 7000iu a day for as long as the doctor says you should take the 50,000iu. After that you may be able to maintain with 5000iu a day if you are average height and weight. The proven safe upper limit is10,000iu or a blood level of 150ng/ml. (Humans in a very short period of time can make 15,000-25,000 iu when sunlight strikes their skin.
    Here at the VDC we promote a lower level of 50ng/ml. Too many bad things start to happen at levels around 30ng/ml.
    We do also try and promote getting “sunlight” which has effects other than just making Vitamin D.
    I do not know where you live. This comes into play because the further away you are from the equator the harder it is to make Vitamin D on your own. So for example where I live, Virginia in the USA does not allow for very much Vitamin D production from about October – March. So it is either supplements or tanning booths that use lamps that mimic the rays of the sun.
    Yes it will help your energy level! Better yet it will decrease your chances of getting cancer and multiple sclerosis.
