Hello, I have been taking a daily vitamin d3 supplement (800 iu) for around 2 months for a diagnosed deficiency and have just had confirmation from my GP that my levels are 'back to normal.' I've been told to stop taking the supplements today, but am worried I could become deficient again. Would it be advised to start taking a multivitamin that includes vitamin d3 at a low dose so I can maintain? And what might I need to look for when choosing appropriate supplements. Your help is much appreciated.

    Emma we here at the VDC promote a “healthy” Vitamin D level of 50ng.ml (125nmol/l). It takes most people weighing an average of 150lbs, 5000iu of D3 a day to reach that goal. Any level below 40ng/ml and your chance for diseases increase a lot.
    So knowing this I would go back to your GP and find out what your exact level is. You might have a level above 20 or 30 but I doubt it is a healthy level.
    Next your instinct is correct, stopping the Vitamin D will just make your levels plummet again. Vitamin D needs to be replenished constantly by supplements, sunshine or sunlamp.
    Do you have ANY health issues? Asking because a higher Vitamin D level may solve them.
    I would find out your level and you should probably be taking 5000iu a day.
