To reduce the risk of asthma, pregnant women should have high serum 25(OH)D levels. Four studies found that higher maternal vitamin D intake or higher serum 25(OH)D levels during pregnancy were associated with reduced risk of wheezing and/or asthma in children at several years of age.

A study in Finland found that during pregnancy, maternal intake of vitamin D from food but not supplements had a beneficial effect on asthma risk at age 5 years [OR = 0.80 (95% CI, 0.64-0.99)]1. See also the study in Japan by Miyake et al2.
