Your wife is severely deficient. It will take a while for her to get better, probably months. The Vitamin D Council once wrote “If you have a severe vitamin D deficiency you may have pain in your bones and weakness, which may mean you have difficulty getting around.” “You may also have frequent infections.” A Vitamin D deficiency can cause many symptoms.
Has someone examined her and found no cause for the “pain and shortness of breath”.
Please read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/. It is very important that she gets all of the co-factors that Vitamin D needs especially magnesium. It is very easy to be magnesium deficient and you cannot rely on standard blood work levels to see if you are deficient. Just assume you are and get supplements but NOT magnesium oxide and other kind will do.
I cannot tell you what to do but the upper safe limit of Vitamin D is 10,000iu a day. She may want to take more than the 6000iu but do not do this until she is taking all the co-factors. Since she had such a low level and if it is possible, she should be retested at four weeks to see if her level is increasing and how much it did. You really need to make sure it is increasing and if not, come back and tell us.
