Mr dr just told me after my wife and i had our yearly physicals that we are vitamin D deficient. We both take multi vitamins containing vitamin D, hers has 800IU's ( womens vitacraves chewables ) and mine has 1600 IU's ( GNC mega Man sport )……how is this possible if the RDA is 700IU? Should we take more vitamin D on top of our multis like our Dr. told us too? It seems like alot. Please advide. Thank you .

    Greetings Joseph M. ~ Multi-vitamins were designed to provide just the minimal amounts of nutrients necessary for good health, under the assumption that diet would supplement the rest. The problem with vitamin D is that there just aren’t any food sources that will provide you with the 5,000 iu D you require on a daily basis in order to maintain an optimal 25(OH)D level, optimal being defined as 50 ng/ml to 80 ng/ml. Therefore, the only way to get sufficient amounts of D is to take a supplement or to sun appropriately. Perhaps others here will also address your question. 🙂 Be well!

    Joseph the RDA recommendations are very out of date and are not keeping up with the current knowledge that science has about Vitamin D. Organizations and scientists are working to try and change this outdated information but the government can be very slow to change.
    You are extremely lucky to have the doctor you have. I think he/she is “up to date” and is truly giving you good information. You did not say how much he recommends taking but I hope it is a minimum of 5000iu a day. You should be trying to reach a blood level of at least 50ng/ml. This is what the science now says is the minimum to be healthy. Please heed his/her advice.
