I have suffered with severe tiredness & fatigue coupled with aches & joint pain and pins & needles. Lately it has got worse over the last few months & now my mood is horrendous. I have also put on weight & no matter how healthy I eat or exercise I can't lose a pound. Just been told my Vit D is 37 nmol & that it should be around 50 nmol. I'm confused as I thought the recommendation was for 50 ng/l. My GP has prescribed 800iu per day but I'm not sure this is enough. I'm at Rock bottom & feeling hideous & GP not much help. Keep saying its depression, yes I feel low but because I'm constantly exhausted & feel huge & swollen all the time. Can anyone give me some advise on what Vit D I should be taking? I need to get well again as this is now affecting my life

    We at the Vitamin D Council recommend taking a minimum of 5000iu of Vitamin D3 and maintaining a blood level of at least 50ng/ml. There are two ways to measure Vitamin D, ng/ml and nmol/l. So 50ng/ml translates to a blood level of 125nmol/l. You will never reach 125nmol/l by taking 800iu. Your Vitamin D level of 37nmol/l translates to 14.8ng/ml.
    The tiredness and fatigue and aches and pains are Vitamin D deficiency related. Please read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/. It is very important. Take the vitamin D for a couple of months and then retest your levels. You may need more than 5000iu to reach the 125nmol/l level.

    To supplement IAWs answer, please let me respectfully add the following: You are severely deficient. Those physicians who are knowledgeable in vitamin D would recommend that you take 10,000 iu D3 daily to treat such deficiency. They would recommend that you take this dose for 8 weeks, and then retest your blood to see how it is utilizing vitamin D. If this dose seems high to you, please realize that even the very conservative IOM has stated 10,000 iu D3 is the safe daily upper limit for vitamin D3. So no worries here. Please remember to take your vitamin D with your largest meal of the day, as this helps with absorption by as much as 30%. Additionally D works best when its co-factors are also taken. In other words you need to take magnesium, zinc, boron and K2. for D to work its best in your body. Finally, please let me add that some folks just don’t absorb D very well, and these folks do better with a sunlamp. There are good sunlamps out there–Sperti makes a nice lamp, for example.
