Hello, I was told by my doctor that I have my Vitamin D was quite low and so she prescribed me 50,000 IU. However I end up having to pay for prescription it's not cheap and I am a college student. I would rather by the supplements over the counter and that way I'll get a bigger amount but is it SAFE to take them over the counter? And, if so how often should I take them, and what kind are recommended?

    Well I would say that most “brands” of Vitamin D supplements are probably safe. The supplement industry is not regulated in the USA (not sure where you are from) but I would say that most major brands and companies are OK. We recommend the Bio Tech brand because it is batch tested and free of colors and fillers.
    It is better to take Vitamin D on a daily basis rather than weekly. So that 50,000 iu once a week translates to 7-8000iu a day. This should be taken for 8 weeks and then the doctor should retest to “make sure” your levels have increased.
    We promote a “healthy” level of 50ng/ml. At levels below 40ng/ml and your risk for cancer and autoimmune disease rises “dramatically”.
    At the end of eight weeks if your level is 50ng/ml or better than you should be able to then take a maintenance dosage of 5000iu a day, forever. IF you don’t your levels will just “plunge” downward again. The 5000iu is based on an average weight of 150lbs. If you weigh more, you have to take more.
